EAST SARAJEVO, May 9 /SRNA/ - The Immortal Regiment marched the streets of East Sarajevo for the first time to mark May 9 – Victory Day with numerous citizens carrying photographs of their ancestors who took part in the Second World War, but also in other liberation wars.

Parade was headed by East Sarajevo Mayor Nenad Vuković and Deputy Chief of Mission of the Russian Federation to BiH Alexei Kerestedzhiyants, as well as city municipalities representatives.

Addressing to the crowd on the eve of the beginning of the march, Kerestedzhiyants said that the main idea and the objective of the Immortal Regiment march, an event originated in Russia, is to never forget the heroes who gave lives for the freedom of their people.

"They were dying on their feet so we would not be living on our knees," said Kerestedzhiyants.

Vuković voiced his satisfaction that East Sarajevo is among 500 cities the world wide, and the third in Republika Srpska besides Banjaluka and Trebinje, that organized the march of the Immortal Regiment, since the event was organised in cooperation with the Russian Embassy, the war veterans organizations arising from the Second World War and the Defensive Patriotic War.

"We are all obliged, primarily because of the young generations, to carry on the truth about the Second World War and the suffering of the Serbs, Russians and Jews, but of other nations too," Vuković said, reminding of the horrific crimes that the Ustasha hordes committed in the region, which must never be forgotten.
