VARGAS: WASHINGTON MUST STAND WITH REPUBLIKA SRPSKA

CHICAGO, MAY 14 /SRNA/ - Washington must stand with the people of Republika Srpska, and it would be a major mistake to ignore the Serbs' struggle for sovereignty at a time of global crises, according to Mark Vargas, Chairman of the Board of the World Leaders Forum at Judson University.

In an opinion piece for Newsmax, Vargas stated that in times of global crises, "it is easy to tune out places like the Balkans," but that ignoring the Serbian people's struggle for sovereignty would be a mistake contrary to American interests and values, as well as the shared history of Serbs and Americans. Vargas reminded that Americans owe gratitude to the Serbian people, who paid a tremendous price during World War II when Nazi Germany and its Croatian fascist allies overran Yugoslavia. "Hundreds of thousands of people were killed in one of the most brutal campaigns of ethnic violence during the war," Vargas stated. According to him, Serbian fighters and civilians stepped in when it mattered most for the United States, even though the Serbs themselves were exposed to terror at the time. Vargas also recalled Operation Halyard, during which Serbs risked everything to protect, feed, and evacuate more than 500 American pilots shot down over occupied territory. "They improvised an airstrip under enemy fire and `smuggled` American servicemen to safety. Americans do not forget who stood by us in the hardest moments, and the people of Republika Srpska deserve to have their voice heard, rather than being dismissed and demonized," Vargas emphasized. He stressed that the Serbs' struggle is rooted in sovereignty - the same principle on which the American nation was founded. Vargas emphasized that Republika Srpska exists thanks to the Dayton Agreement, which established two entities with defined autonomy and protections designed to prevent the dominance of one side over the other. "However, global bureaucrats and so-called high representatives have for years been working to reduce that autonomy and advocating greater centralization in Sarajevo. The Serb people and leaders such as /President Milorad/ Dodik have resisted, with the aim of preserving their language, Orthodox Christianity, tradition, and the right to self-determination," Vargas stated. The text emphasized that this "is not extremism but self-determination," and that it is the same instinct that guided the founding of America and continues to define American national identity. Vargas wrote that stability in the Balkans is important for American security, warning that BiH remains fragile and that external influence and the risk of renewed unrest represent real challenges. "Destabilization of the region could once again shake Europe and the world, including migration-related pressures and security concerns that ultimately reach American shores," Vargas warned. He also emphasized that Western media narratives have, for too long, portrayed Serbs as "one-dimensional villains," and that the reality is far more complex, claiming that other sides during the conflicts of the 1990s caused significant Serbian suffering that is often ignored. "US President Donald Trump understands the importance of realism in foreign policy, and that's why Dodik praises Trump's leadership, saying that strength and clarity - rather than endless intervention - offer the best path to resolving conflicts. Such an approach rejects failed globalist strategies and instead respects sovereignty and local realities," Vargas stated. According to him, Americans do not need to "micromanage" BiH; instead, the idea that Republika Srpska is a problem must be rejected, as it is, in many ways, a stabilizing force that seeks to preserve the framework which the United States also helped create. "In a divided world, lasting peace does not come from imposing uniformity, but from respecting different peoples, their history, and their right to plan their own future. It is time for America to remember who stood with us, and why that still matters today," Vargas concluded.
