GUJIĆ: NUMEROUS MASSACRE SITES TESTIFY TO SACRIFICE SERBIAN PEOPLE MADE FOR FREEDOM

MOSTAR, MAY 9 /SRNA/ - On the occasion of Victory Day, the Consul General of Serbia in Mostar Vaso Gujić laid a wreath today at the memorial to fallen fighters of the People's Liberation War /NOR/ and civilian victims of World War II in the Baćevići neighborhood of Mostar. He emphasized that the Serbian people made enormous sacrifices for freedom in all the regions where they lived.
"We are reminded of this by numerous sites of massacre, from Jasenovac to Donja Gradina, and even this monument in Baćevići, which testifies to the sacrifice and efforts made for freedom in every inch where Serbs lived. This monument bears the names of 53 fallen villagers from this Serbian village - 20 fighters of the People's Liberation Army and 33 victims of the Ustaše," said Gujić. He said that today marks Victory Day and the 80th anniversary of the triumph over the dark forces of Nazism, emphasizing that the Serbian people were among the first in Europe to oppose Nazi Germany and its allies. Gujić reminded that this monument in Baćevići was destroyed in the last war but was rebuilt with great effort by the locals, Serbian returnees to this place, and with the help of the city of Zrenjanin. He emphasized that the Partisan Cemetery in Mostar is also a significant testament to the suffering and struggle of the Serbian people for freedom. "I hope that next year we will mark Victory Day in Mostar together, lay wreaths, and pay tribute to the fallen fighters of the Second World War," said Gujić. He emphasized that May 9 should always serve as a reminder that freedom is the most expensive yet most valuable achievement a nation can have. Gujić said that the culture of remembrance must be nurtured, the truth passed on to future generations, and peace and stability preserved diligently. The monument in Baćevići was consecrated in 2022 in the presence of numerous locals and guests.
