MEVLID JAŠAREVIĆ'S PRISON SENTENCE FOR TERRORISM EXPIRES IN SEPTEMBER, BUT HE FACES NEW INDICTMENT

SARAJEVO, JANUARY 13 /SRNA/ – Mevlid Jašarević, who is serving a 15-year prison sentence for a terrorist attack on the US Embassy in Sarajevo, is due to be released from prison in September, but a new indictment has been filed against him for threatening prison officers, attorney Senad Dupovac told SRNA.

Dupovac, who represented Jašarević in the trial for the terrorist attack, said he does not know whether Jašarević will be released from the Vojkovići prison in September in light of the new indictment. "A new indictment has been filed against him, so I do not know how this will proceed now. I am not his defense attorney in the new case," Dupovac said. Jašarević was initially sentenced to 18 years in prison for the attack on the U.S. Embassy, but the sentence was reduced by three years in the second-instance proceedings due to his expression of remorse. The attack on the US Embassy took place on October 28, 2011, when Jašarević fired 105 rounds from an automatic rifle, wounding a police officer with the Directorate for Coordination of Police Bodies Mirsad Velić.
