FOUR YOUNG IMPERIAL EAGLES TAGGED FOR MONITORING
BELGRADE, JULY 6 /SRNA/ – The Bird Protection and Study Society of Serbia has tagged four chicks of the protected eastern imperial eagle in the municipalities of Sečanj and Žitište to enable ornithologists to monitor their movements.
The chicks were fitted with metal and plastic identification rings as well as satellite tracking devices. After being tagged, they were returned to their nests, where they are expected to leave the nest in about two weeks. In addition to this year`s chicks, conservationists are continuously monitoring five previously tagged young eagles, the society said in a statement. The society has been tagging eastern imperial eagle chicks since 2021. Satellite telemetry allows researchers to assist individual birds when they encounter difficulties, as was the case with an eagle named Felix, which wandered as far as Syria, where it was later found to have been electrocuted on a power line. Compared with 2025, when 19 breeding pairs and 14 chicks were recorded, the society said both the population and nesting success have increased, making this the most successful breeding season for the eastern imperial eagle since 2017.
