NO JUSTICE FOR SERBS KILLED IN JELAŠCI EVEN AFTER 34 YEARS
VIŠEGRAD, AUGUST 2 /SRNA/ – The 34th anniversary of the killing of 11 Serbs by Bosniak forces on the eve of St. Elijah's Day in 1992 was commemorated today in the village of Jelašci near Višegrad, with participants once again calling on the competent institutions to prosecute those responsible for the crime.
A memorial service was held at the monument for ten Serbian civilians, including two children, and one member of the Republika Srpska Army who were killed. Wreaths were then laid by Višegrad Mayor Mladen Đurević and representatives of the Municipal War Veterans Organisation. Đurević said that the victims of Jelašci must not be forgotten and that everyone has a duty to persist in demanding that those responsible for the crime be brought to justice. "Even after 34 years, the victims' families are still waiting for justice. It is our duty to preserve the memory of those innocent who were killed and to ensure that young generations know the truth about this tragic event," Đurević said. Jelašci resident Brane Šimšić said that what is especially painful is that no one has been held accountable for the crime to this day. "There are fewer and fewer witnesses, but it is our obligation to gather here every year and preserve the memory of the innocent victims," Šimšić said. During the attack on the village of Jelašci on the eve of St. Elijah's Day in 1992, Trivun Jeličić, his wife Mira, his daughter-in-law and her children, eight-year-old Vidoje and ten-year-old Dragana, as well as Slavka and Dragan Šušnjar, and Mile Savić, his wife Petka and his brother Radomir, were killed. More than three decades later, no one has been finally convicted for the crime.
