LAKIĆ CALLS ON MANAGEMENT OF TUZLA THERMAL POWER PLANT TO RESIGN OVER ENVIRONMENTAL INCIDENT
SARAJEVO, AUGUST 26 /SRNA/ - Federal Minister of Mining and Industry Vedran Lakić has called on the management of the Tuzla Thermal Power Plant to resign over increased emissions of particulate matter, stressing that no position is more important than people’s health and the safety of the energy system.
Lakić said the goal was to protect the lives and health of residents of Tuzla, Lukavac, Živinice and surrounding areas, as well as the plant’s workers, while ensuring the completely safe operation of the entire facility. The minister met today with the management of the federal power utility Elektroprivreda and the Tuzla Thermal Power Plant, including directors and heads of technical departments. The meeting was preceded by a gathering of residents of settlements in the vicinity of the Tuzla Thermal Power Plant over the latest environmental incident at the plant, which was caused by a malfunction of an electrostatic precipitator due to the use of low-quality coal. As a result, numerous households were covered in a layer of dust, further endangering the health of residents. The federal power utility Elektroprivreda was asked to conduct a comprehensive analysis of the causes of all incidents related to poor management of the system and propose measures to address them.
