UNIVERSITY LIBRARY IN BELGRADE OPENED IN 1926
BIJELJINA, MAY 23 /SRNA/ - The University Library in Belgrade, whose construction began in 1921 with the support of the Carnegie Endowment, was opened on May 24, 1926.
It was the first building in Serbia purpose-built as a library. It received its current name, the University Library "Svetozar Marković," in 1946. It serves as the main library for the university, higher education, and research institute libraries in central Serbia, including the city of Belgrade. It is also the main library for the areas of the Mačva, Kolubara, Podunavlje, Braničevo, Šumadija, Pomoravlje, Bor, Zaječar, Zlatibor, Moravica, Raška, Rasina, Nišava, Toplica, Pirot, Jablanica, and Pčinja administrative districts. It serves the educational and scientific needs of students, university professors, and researchers. At the time of its founding, the library’s collection contained 57,254 publications, both monographs and serials, and today it holds more than 1.7 million items.
