MILIĆEVIĆ: THE PETROVAC ROAD CRIME – ETERNAL WARNING
BELGRADE, AUGUSt 7 /SRNA/ – The Petrovac Road, the place where the lives of Serb civilians, women, elderly people and children were cut short by bombs dropped at a refugee convoy, is a symbol of the suffering of an entire people and an eternal warning to humanity of what happens when the boundaries between war and crime are lost, said Đorđe Milićević, Minister without Portfolio in the Government of Serbia in charge of relations with the diaspora.
Milićević stressed that there is no political, military or any other objective that can justify an attack on innocent people. He said that the pilots who carried out the attack clearly saw that it was a refugee convoy in which there were no military personnel, but people seeking safety fleeing the war. “31 years later, no one has been held accountable for one of the most brutal crimes committed against the Serb civilians,” Milićević said. He said that the Petrovac Road crime is one of the most painful in the national memory of the Serb people and part of history that Serbia will never allow to be suppressed, silenced or forgotten. Milićević stressed that the culture of remembrance is the foundation of national dignity and responsibility towards the victims, and that only a people that remembers its victims can build a future based on truth, justice and peace. He noted that a people that abandons remembrance allows others to write its history for it, according to a statement from the Office of the Minister without Portfolio in charge of monitoring the situation, proposing measures and participating in the coordination of activities in the area of Serbia’s relations with the diaspora.
