VILAN: SREBRENICA IS NOT GENOCIDE, ONE SHOULD TRUST AUTHORITIES WHO KNOW IT

BELGRADE, APRIL 26 /SRNA/ - Israeli Ambassador to Serbia, Yahel Vilan, says genocide did not happen in Srebrenica and that the world should trust the authorities who really know it, such as Efraim Zuroff, Yehuda Bauer or Gideon Greif.

Vilan believes that the use of the term genocide in the case of Srebrenica is wrong and gives a distorted picture of the event. "I'm not saying that the Holocaust is the only genocide, there were other cases of genocide around the world, but when you qualify Srebrenica a genocide, in my opinion, it diminishes the importance of that term, which should only be used for genocide cases. Israel was also summoned to The Hague for the alleged genocide in Gaza. In my opinion, Srebrenica case should not be called genocide," Vilan told Sputnik. He assessed that the session of the UN General Assembly and the adoption of the resolution on Srebrenica are not being prepared on the basis of historical facts, and that it is not about moral aspects, but politics. "Everything in the UN is politics and only politics. There are certain standards for one country and others for other countries. Unfortunately, most of the time we suffer from such a formula based on which the UN functions. Maybe Serbia will suffer from the same UN policy, but in my opinion, such issues should be resolved morally and legally, avoiding politics," said Vilan. According to him, once issues like Srebrenica enter politics, it is not good for historical, nor for moral facts. He pointed out that no one is wondering what the resolution on Srebrenica would bring to BiH and the region and how it would affect the stability of those countries. "Unfortunately, I don't think the resolution carries any positive message or the idea of this country to remain united," Vilan said, adding that he did not understand how many European countries recognized the crime in Srebrenica as genocide.
