EXPERT REPORTS ON GENERAL MLADIĆ’S HEALTH CONDITION HAVE ARRIVED
BELGRADE, MAY 8 /SRNA/ - Reports by two medical experts on the health condition of General Ratko Mladić have arrived, fulfilling the first step in the procedure envisaged for deciding on the request by his family and defence team for his release for medical treatment in Serbia, the general’s son, Darko Mladić, told SRNA this evening.
"One report on General Ratko Mladić’s health condition arrived earlier today, and the second one arrived in the afternoon, but we cannot reveal anything until we receive authorization," Darko Mladić said. He stressed that this fulfilled the first step in the procedure foreseen for deciding on the request to release General Mladić for medical treatment in Serbia. He noted that the next step now lies with the detention doctors, who have deadline until Monday, May 11, to provide their assessment and any additions to the experts’ reports, if they have any. "Then on Tuesday, May 12, we are supposed to respond to that, after which the Mechanism should make a decision on our request to release the General for treatment," Darko Mladić said. Commenting on the decision by Mechanism President Graciela Gatti Santana not to receive the delegation of the Republika Srpska Ministry of Justice for talks regarding General Mladić’s health condition, his medical care, and the conditions in which he is being held in The Hague, Darko Mladić said he did not understand the decision and saw no reason for it. As he said, if the statement was translated correctly, he also did not understand the Mechanism’s reply to the Republika Srpska Ministry of Justice stating that “in order to preserve both the appearance and the reality of judicial independence regarding Mr. Mladić’s request, the president is currently unable to receive the delegation.” General Ratko Mladić suffered a stroke on April 10, and his already serious health condition further deteriorated, as he has severe neurological, cardiovascular, and nephrological problems. On May 2, he was transferred from the detention hospital to a civilian hospital in The Hague due to suspicion of a stroke. Since doctors did not confirm that the General had suffered a stroke, he was returned to the detention hospital. General Mladić has been in the detention hospital in The Hague since 2024, where he is under palliative care. The Mechanism has repeatedly rejected requests for his provisional release for treatment in Serbia.
