RESIDUAL MECHANISM INTERVENTED TO PROVIDE MEDICAL ASSISTANCE TO KARADŽIĆ
ISTOČNO SARAJEVO, FEBRUARY 5 /SRNA/ - Attorney Goran Petronijević told SRNA that the Residual Mechanism for Criminal Courts also intervened with the authorities of the Albany prison in Great Britain, where the first president of Republika Srpska Radovan Karadžić is, to provide him with the necessary medical help, which was missing, and he stressed that it is sad that the prison authorities of Albany are forced to do what they have to do.
"This is not about serving a sentence, but a humanitarian issue," Petronijević pointed out. According to him, the question is what would have happened to Karadžić if there had been no activity by Karadžić's family and the public, and him as a trustee. "A person at that age with chronic diseases must have health care and help, and not create a situation in which the body will enter a crisis and then see whether it will come out of that crisis or not," Petronijević stated. He said that he spoke to Karadžić on the phone, who is exhausted and barely able to speak. "I don't know how much this intervention will affect the improvement of his health. I think the recovery process will take a little longer if it goes well," added Petronijević. The first president of Republika Srpska Radovan Karadžić was placed in Albany Prison on the Isle of Wight, where, after being convicted at the Hague Tribunal, he is serving a life sentence. It is a prison that has a reputation as one of the worst prison institutions in Great Britain and does not meet the numerous conditions stipulated by the standards in most European countries. Citizens of Republika Srpska, Serbia, Montenegro and the diaspora launched a petition demanding respect for the human rights of the first president of Srpska Radovan Karadžić and for him to be returned to the UN detention unit in The Hague or transferred to another country where he will receive adequate medical assistance.
